Calendar Quarters

Explanation of standard Bikram Sambat calendar quarters compared to government fiscal trimesters.

Standard calendar quarters divide the Bikram Sambat calendar year into four equal three month periods starting from 1 Baisakh. This guide clarifies the structural difference between standard calendar quarters and Nepal government fiscal year trimesters, which commence three months later on 1 Shrawan.

Calendar Quarters Breakdown

Unlike the government fiscal calendar which begins in Shrawan, standard calendar quarters follow the natural calendar year starting from Baisakh:

QuarterMonths IncludedMonth IndicesApproximate Gregorian Window
Q1Baisakh, Jestha, Asar0, 1, 2Mid April to Mid July
Q2Shrawan, Bhadra, Aswin3, 4, 5Mid July to Mid October
Q3Kartik, Mangsir, Poush6, 7, 8Mid October to Mid January
Q4Magh, Falgun, Chaitra9, 10, 11Mid January to Mid April

The library provides dedicated methods for working with standard calendar quarters:

from nepali_date_library import NepaliDate

date = NepaliDate("2081-01-15")

# Calendar quarter number (1 to 4)
print(date.current_quarter()) # 1

# Start and end dates of the active calendar quarter
c_dates = date.current_quarter_dates()
print(f"Starts: {c_dates['start'].format('YYYY-MM-DD')}")
print(f"Ends:   {c_dates['end'].format('YYYY-MM-DD')}")

# Static lookup for a specific year and quarter
q2_2081 = NepaliDate.get_quarter(quarter=2, year=2081)
print(f"Q2 starts: {q2_2081['start'].format('YYYY-MM-DD')}")
