Fiscal Year & Quarters Guide

Architecture and calculation rules for Nepal official fiscal year and quarterly trimester accounting cycles.

In Nepal the official fiscal year begins on 1 Shrawan and ends on the final day of Ashadh in the following calendar year. The nepali date library includes specialized functions to compute fiscal years, identify trimester quarters, and determine quarter start and end boundary dates for financial, tax, and accounting systems.

Fiscal Year Structure

Because the fiscal year starts in the fourth month of Bikram Sambat (Shrawan), every fiscal cycle spans two calendar years:

  • Format: Standardized as YYYY/YY (e.g. 2081/82 BS).
  • Start Date: 1 Shrawan (Month index 3, Day 1).
  • End Date: Last day of Ashadh (Month index 2, Day 31 or 32 of the succeeding calendar year).

Fiscal Quarters (Trimesters)

The financial year is divided into four 3-month quarters:

QuarterSpan (Bikram Sambat Months)Typical Gregorian SpanAccounting Significance
Q11 Shrawan – Last day of AshwinMid-July to Mid-OctoberFirst trimester; Dashain festival preparations
Q21 Kartik – Last day of PoushMid-October to Mid-JanuarySecond trimester; mid-term budget review
Q31 Magh – Last day of ChaitraMid-January to Mid-AprilThird trimester; third-quarter corporate advance tax
Q41 Baisakh – Last day of AshadhMid-April to Mid-JulyFinal trimester; annual financial closing & tax filing

[!NOTE] Notice that Q4 takes place in the succeeding Bikram Sambat calendar year (Baisakh, Jestha, Ashadh). The library automatically increments the calendar year when calculating Q4 boundaries.

Fiscal Quarters vs. Calendar Quarters

nepali-date-library provides separate APIs for both systems:

  • Fiscal Quarters: Used for taxation, corporate accounting, and financial reporting. Runs Shrawan to Ashadh.
  • Calendar Quarters: Used for calendar quarters, seasonal reporting, and academic trimesters. Runs Baisakh to Chaitra.
